Enforcing travel ban vital for the fight against corruption in Nigeria- UK envoy

The United Kingdom high commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright on Tuesday said the implementation of the executive order six by the Buhari administration is vital in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

The High Commissioner who made the assertion in an interview with channels television noted that the order will help root out corruption in the country.

He said, “I’ve heard that this is an anti-corruption measure, it’s not for me to say who should or should not be on the list,” he was quoted as saying.

“But what I would say is that it’s very important in continuing this fight against corruption and rooting out corruption where it is happening.”

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the executive order to restrain owners of assets under probe from carrying out further transactions on such assets on July 5, 2018.

The measure, according to the President is to stop the suspected corrupt persons from using their proceeds to pervert justice.

The presidency over the weekend announced that some 50 Nigerians have been placed on a watch list and those affected will be restricted from leaving the country until the corruption cases against them are concluded.

The travel ban was criticised by Lawyers, civil society groups and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
