72-year-old man held for ‘raping’ minor in Ogun

By our reporter| A 72-year-old man, Ishola Tijani is in police custody in Ogun State for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl.

The suspect was arrested following a report by the mother of the victim, who reported the crime at Iperu police station, Iperu – Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

In a statement on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun state police spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the arrest was made on September 22.

According to him, the complainant said she had returned from an outing only to discover that her daughter was feeling uncomfortable.

“When she made an enquiry from the little girl, she explained to her that it was the old man who lured her into his room and forcefully had sex with her,” the statement said.

Oyeyemi said upon receipt of the report, operatives from Iperu division were quickly detailed to the scene where the old man was promptly arrested.

“The victim was taken to an hospital where it was confirmed that the girl has been actually defiled,” the statement continued.

He equally said the suspect had made confessional statement, admitting culpability of the offence.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the anti human trafficking and child labour unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and prosecution.

The Ogun State Police Commissioner have, therefore, appealed to parents to keep their children safe at all times.
