Ebun Francis || Tragedy struck at Chibok community, Chibok Local Government Area of Bornu State, Sunday afternoon as a soldier, Staff Sergent Silas Ninyo shot dead Captain T Mani who tried to stop him from molesting innocent civilians.
The staff sergeant later took his own life.
A situation report of the incident filed by the army said that the late Captain was providing security with other soldiers for worshippers at a local church when there were informed that a drunken soldier was beating and molesting civilians in the area.
According to the report, “Captain Mani, accompanied by soldiers, moved to the scene to free the civilian but while trying to disarm the errant soldier, Captain Mani was shot dead by Staff Sergeant Ninyo, who later killed himself.”
Confirming the incident, Sani Usman, the army spokesman said the deaths of the captain and soldier was a great loss to the army.
A committee of inquiry he said, has been set up to investigate that circumstance that lead to the shooting incident.
Usman said, “The board of inquiry is expected to investigate the incident and promptly turn in its report and findings in one week.”
“At about 12:50 pm today, the unit received a report that a staff was seen to be drunk and misbehaving to civilians.
“An officer was dispatched to the scene with a view to bringing him back to base. The officer did his best but the Senior Non-Commission Officer (SNCO) refused several entreaties to calm him and be disarmed by the superior officer.
“Unfortunately, the staff sergeant shot the officer dead and then killed himself. Their remains have since been evacuated to a military facility.”
The bodies of the captain and staff sergeant were deposited at a military hospital, Yola Adamawa State.
