Chidi Samuel || There was prolonged tension in the Asokoro area of Abuja on Tuesday as the State Security Service, SSS, and the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, resisted an attempt by a combined team of EFCC officials and police officers to arrest
the former head of the NIA, Ayo Oke, and former head of the SSS, Ita Ekpeyong, from their homes on Mamman Nasir Street in the Asokoro district of Abuja.
The standoff between armed security officers from all the four agencies caused a traffic mayhem in the area.
The attempt to arrest Oke and his wife is apparently in connection with the discovery of the large sums of money at a flat in Osborne Towers Ikoyi earlier in the year said to belong to National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
While Oke was the DG of the NIA at the time, it was the wife was said to be the owner of the apartment.
They were both invited by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to assist with the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the cash, whether they honoured the invitation is not yet known.
The reason for the attempted arrest of Ekpeyong, the former head of the SSS is not known.
