Rape of 6-month-old: Aisha Buhari seeks review of N10,000 fine

Ebun Francis || Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, has called for a review of the N10,000 fine against the rapist of a six-month old baby in Kano last year.

The wife of the President made the call on Saturday at a National workshop on war against Abuse in Nigeria organised by her future assured forum at the Banquet Hall of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The first lady charged the nation’s judiciary to review penalties on abuse in Nigeria in order to adequately address violation of the fundamental human rights of victims.

According to her, child abuse, human trafficking, child marriage, cyber bullying, domestic violence and abuse of the elderly remained a cause for concern despite legislative measures.

She harped on the need to educate people and raise necessary awareness on preventive measures and the need for immediate reporting of incidences to law enforcement agencies to take appropriate action. “This workshop,” She said, “will proffer workable solutions to addressing this social problem.”

Boss Mustafa, the Secretary to the government of the federation who attended the event commended the efforts of Future assured in highlighting the ills of child abuse and other related vices, asking other nongovernmental organisations to emulate the examples of the forum.
