The presidency on Monday summoned the inspector -general of police, Ibrahim Idris, to the presidential villa in Abuja to comment on the embarrassing police protest along the Maiduguri Highway, according to sources that monitored his meeting with vice president Yemi Osinbajo.

The meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo took place hours after some mobile policemen in Maiduguri protested the non-payment of their allowances in the last six months.

The IGP declined to speak with reporters after the meeting.

The Borno State Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu confirmed the protest which lasted up to three hours.

“We woke up this morning to experience a protest at State HQ gate by visiting PMF men in Borno State over unpaid special duty allowances for five months running,” he said while answering reporters questions.

“We are making efforts to pacify them and to assure them of their payments of entitlements soonest.”

Jimoh Moshood, force spokesman, on his part blamed the non-payment on the delay in the passage of the 2018 budget.

He, however, denied that there was a protest in Maiduguri, saying the officers involved only made inquiries about their allowances.
