Nigerians were on Tuesday spared from mourning over more than a hundred passengers on Air Peace flight from Port Harcourt to Lagos as the aircraft which declared emergency crash-landed at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
According to aviation sources, the aircraft with 133 passengers and six crew members developed a technical fault after takeoff from Port Harcourt, Rivers State but the pilot of the Boeing 737 aircraft manoeuvred the plane to its destination but the landing gear collapsed after dropping 30 ft shortly before landing at the Lagos Airport.
AIB, while confirming the incident in a statement, noted that the aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-300 with the registration marks 5N-BQO and operated by Air Peace Limited.
A statement by its commissioner, Akin Olateru read, “From the information provided, the aircraft nose wheel collapsed on landing on the runway (18R) and the nose wheel gear tire sheared off.
“The AIB was informed of a minor injury but no fatality.
“Our team of safety investigators have commenced investigations.”
AIB also called for support from members of the public with any video clip, relevant evidence, or information that can aid their investigation.
This is the second major incident involving Air Peace in recent times. One of its aircraft last month overshot the runway while landing at the Port Harcourt airport last month.
No life was lost in the incident.
