FG indicts South African police over fresh attack on Nigerians

The Federal Government has confirmed the attack on Nigerian businesses in South Africa over the weekend, describing it as ‘sickening and depressing’.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama who confirmed the incident in a tweet on his verified Twitter handle, vowed that the federal government will take decisive measures in dealing with the matter.

He also called out the South African security agencies over their failure to protect Nigerians.

Onyema tweeted, ”Received sickening and depressing news of continued burning and looting of Nigerian shops and premises in #SouthAfrica by mindless criminals with ineffective police protection. Enough is enough. We will take definitive measures. @NigeriaGov @DigiCommsNG @GovernmentZA @DIRCO_ZA”

South African looters on Sunday night attacked businesses in central Johannesburg owned by Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

The attack which began in the early hours of Sunday, was not quelled until later on Monday.

Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa have been victims of attacks, most of which are xenophobic.

Just recently, Obinna Ayanele, a Nigerian living in South Africa, was killed by suspected hoodlums.
