Community spread of Covid-19 rising in Lagos as NCDC confirms 16 new cases

Nigeria confirms 16 new cases, toll now 254

By our reporter| Lagos state commissioner of health, Akin Abayomi, has disclosed that community transmission of COVID-19 is on the rise in the state.

Abayomi who made the discloure at a press briefing on Monday, explained that as at week four, 82 percent of the COVID-19 cases were imported into the country but the following week, 45 percent of the patients had no travel history.

The commissioner also revealed that of the 120 confirmed cases of the disease in Lagos, 29 have been discharged while 87 are still active.

He said, “At the end of week 4, 82% of the patients imported the disease from abroad while 18% had no travel history.”

“By the end of week 5, 45% of the patients have no travel history. This shows that the importation is decreasing and local transmission is increasing.”

“There have been 120 confirmed cases of COVID 19 in Lagos. 87 of the cases are still active, 29 have been discharged, 2 have been evacuated and we have had 2 fatalities,” Abayomi said.

“The death that occurred at LUTH, all concerned have been put under isolation and will be observed for 14 days.”

“Most of the cases are between 30 – 60 years of age. Gender ratio: 67% male, 33% female. The LGA with the highest number of cases is Eti Osa LGA,” the commissioner said.

“We will also deploy more surveillance and advocacy towards Alimosho LGA. We are focusing on Alimosho because of the sudden rise from 1 case to 4 cases.

“Our isolation Centre Capacity; IDH, Yaba = 124 beds, now at 60% capacity. Cardiac and Renal Centre, Gbagada =180 beds, Onikan = 100 beds, LUTH = 60 beds.”

The commissioner further revealed that the Onikan isolation centre wuold be used to handle mild and moderate cases, while the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba, will be reserved for “complicated cases.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria on Tuesday confirmed 16 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections in the country to 254.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed the updated figure on its verified Twitter handle.

According to the health agency, ten of the new cases were discovered in Lago, two in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Oyo.

Delta and Katsina States recorded their first cases of coronavirus.

The NCDC stressed that the country recorded a new death – total at six – while 44 people have recovered from the disease and have since been discharged.
