82-year-old hypertensive patient recovers from COVID-19 in Osun as Nigeria’s infections hit 9,303 with 387 new cases

Chidi Samuel| An 82-year-old woman in Osun state has recovered from coronavirus, even as the country’s new infections raced past the 9000 marks with 387 new cases on Saturday night.

Osun state commissioner for health, Rafiu Isamotu who made the disclosure on Friday evening, said the woman recovered after receiving nine-day treatment at the isolation centre in Asubiaro, Osogbo, the state capital.

According to the commissioner, the Octogenerian recovered despite being hypertensive.

He said the patient, who contracted the disease after coming in contact with an infected person, showed no symptoms of the virus before her sample was collected.

He said, “The story of the 82-year-old widow who recovered from the dreaded coronavirus provides a glimmer of hope, considering that she is a hypertensive patient on medication.”

“Although when she arrived at our Isolation centre on the 13th of May, she had no cough, difficulty in breathing, sore throat, fever or anosmia associated with the virus except for diarrhoea and we successfully treated her for it and she was stable all through the period of hospitalisation.

“On her 9th day on admission, we carried out a follow-up Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on her and the result came back negative and she was subsequently discharged on the 24th of May, 2020.

“Furthermore, a follow-up at her home after her discharge revealed that she was stable.”

This is the second oldest survivor in Nigeria following last month’s recovery of a 98-year-old COVID-19 patient in Lagos.

Meanwhile Nigeria’s coronavirus cases increased further on Friday with 387 cases reported, even as authorities intensify efforts to flatten the curve of the pandemic.

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control showed that the cases were spread across 13 states and the FCT, with Lagos accounting for the highest number of infections for the day with 254 cases.

According to the health agency, the country’s total infections currently stands at 9,302, out of which 2697 have been discharged with 261 deaths.
