Nigeria’s COVID-19 infections exceed 30,000 as FG says unity schools will not participate in WAEC exams, reverses school resumption

Chidi Samuel| Nigeria on Wednesday recorded 460 new cases of the novel coronavirus, pushing the country’s toll of the highly contagious virus above the 30,000-mark.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control made te disclosure in a tweet via its official Twitter handle.

According to the NCDC, the number of total infections in the country now stands at 30,249, with 684 deaths and 12,373 discharges.

The health agency further reported that Lagos, the epicentre of the outbreak reported the highest number of cases among the states with 150 while Rivers recorded 49.

Other states with new infections include, Oyo 43, Delta 38, FCT 26, Anambra 20, Kano 20, Plateau 18, Edo 14, Bayelsa 13, Enugu 13, Osun 12, Kwara 10, Borno 8, Ogun 7, Kaduna 6, Imo 4, Bauchi 3, Gombe 3, Niger 2 and Adamawa 1.

No unity school will participate in scheduled WAEC exams as FG reverses school resumption

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu on Wednesday said no Unity School will participate in the scheduled WAEC exams.

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, minister of state for education, had on Monday said that the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has fixed the commencement of the examination for August 5.

But speaking with state house correspondents at the end of the virtual federal executive council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, Adamu Adamu, minister of education, announced that schools under the control of the federal government will not participate in the examination.

He also called on state governments who have agreed to reopen schools to reconsider the action due to the COVID-19 situation.

“I appeal to state governments that have announced schools’ resumption to reconsider it. I think it’s not safe. Let’s protect our children,” he said.

The Minister urged the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the state governments to reconsider their decision to open for exams.
