Benin prison attacked by hoodlums, inmates freed

By our reporter| Suspected thugs on Monday morning attacked Oko prison on Sapele Road in Benin City, the Edo State capital, in what prison officials said was a failed jail break attempt.

It was gathered that the armed thugs had earlier hijacked an #EndSARS protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the state.

According to prison officials, 10 inmates escaped but was later arrested.

Residentsn the area said heavily armed men drove into the area early unday morning and forced the prison gates open with gunfire and explosives but were repelled by security personnel guarding the facility.

Edo state controller of prisons, F.O. Ewulo while confirming the incident, however, said there were no immediate report of any casualty.
