Chidi Samuel| A total of 138 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have so far tested positive to COVID-19, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control has said.
The Director-General, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, who made the disclosure Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, said the safe reopening of the NYSC camps across the country was successful as none of those who tested positive were allowed into the camps.
According to him, a total of 34,785 Corps members and members of the camp communities have been tested so far in the last weeks of which only 138 was found positive, which is 0.4% prevalence and 1 (one) on 200 people.
“Those who tested positive were either managed at home or in a treatment centre depending on if they have symptoms and what state they were in,” Ihekweazu said.
He further explained that as talks between ASUU and the Federal Government progresses, the next challenge will be how to work with education stakeholders to ensure the safe reopening of the universities.
“Universities have proven to be slightly risky it has it’s unique challenges, but we are confident that we can address this as we have done in other sectors like the aviation,” he said.
Nigeria confirms 56 new coronavirus cases
Meanwhile Nigeria on Monday confirmed 56 new cases of #COVID19 bringing the country’s case load to 66,439.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control which made the disclosure via a statement from its verified Twitter handle said the new infections were recorded in ten states and the FCT with Kaduna leading with 18 new cases, followed by the FCT with -17.
Other states that recorded new infections include, Lagos-6,
Plateau-5, Kano-3, Kwara-2, Yobe-2, Ekiti-1, Niger-1, and
Rivers-1.
The NCDC further noted that the country has so far dischareged 62,241 patients with 1,168 fatalities recorded.
