Kaduna shut schools over COVID-19 as fear of banditry forces Zamfara to close 10

By our reporter| The Kaduna State Government on Tuesday shut all schools across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state following an upsurge of the COVID-19.

A statement by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Shehu Makarfi directed all schools in the state to close as from Wednesday, December 16, 2020.

According to the commissioner, the measure was taken to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic following its second wave in the state.

He explained that the rising cases of COVID-19 showed a replicate of figures recorded in the first wave of the pandemic in April, May, and June 2020, indicating that a new wave of the infection is rapidly spreading across the state.

He noted that the State’s Ministry of Health has further confirmed that, while the infections cut across age groups, the new wave especially, affects those between 10 and 35 years (which form a majority of the populace in the education sector).

All examinations, the commissioner said, must be concluded on or before Tuesday, 15th December, 2020 in all institutions of learning across the state.

He added that physical classes in the universities and other institutions of Higher Learning would not be held during the period of closure.

“The ministry wishes to inform the general public, parents, guardians, and students of the date of school’s closure due to rising cases of COVID-19 infections in the state which shows a replicate of figures recorded in the first wave of the pandemic in April, May and June 2020. Indicating that a new wave of the infection is rapidly spreading across the state.”

“Learners in the basic, post-basic and secondary school levels could continue learning while at home from the Kaduna State TV and Radio e-Learning Programmes,” the statement read.

Also on Tuesday, the Zamfara State government ordered the immediate closure of some Boarding and Day Schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Ibrahim Abdullahi who made the announcement while briefing reporters in Gusau, the state capital, explained that the affected schools were those that share borders with Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto States.

According to the commissioner, the three states were prone to banditry, saying that the decision was important to forestall any form of attack on the schools as happened at the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.

The affected educational facilities comprise seven boarding schools and day schools.

Boarding schools listed include G.S.S. in Tsafe, G.S.S. in Magaji, G.A.S.S. in Zurmi, G.G.S.S. in Moriki, Science Secondary School in Shinkafi, Science Secondary School in Dansadau, and Science Secondary School in Bukkuyum.

The affected day schools are G.D.S.S. in Nasarawa Mailayi, G.D.S.S in Gusami, and G.D.S.S. in Gurbin Bore.
