Court sets aside death sentence imposed on Kano singer, orders re-trial

Yusuf Bello| A Kano State high court on Thursday set aside the death sentence imposed on Kano-bases singer, Yahya Sharif Aminu, convicted for blasphemy by an upper sharia court last year.

The state chief judge, Nuraddeen Sagir who presided over the case, said the trial of the singer was full of irregularities as the appellant was not given legal representation.

The judgement of the upper Sharia court contravened section 2-6-9 of the administration of criminal justice act, Justice Sagir ruled.

He, therefore, ordered a re-trial of the case at the same court but under a different judge.

Sagir also ordered that the appellant should get full legal representation and given a fair trial.
