FG warns of possible scarcity of petrol

By our reporter| The Nigerian Government has expressed concern over the possibility of a scarcity of petrol in the country.

Nigeria’s minister of state for petroleum, Timipre Sylva raised the concern on Monday at a meeting between the government and leaders of the organised labour.

The meeting was a continuation of the series of dialogues between both parties in a bid to persuade the labour unions not to go on strike over the increase in the price of petrol and electricity tariffs.

The chairman of the technical committee on PMS, Onochie Anyaoku, while presenting its report, highlighted the areas where the government should work on reducing the price of petrol.

But the committee on electricity tariff, however, said its work was ongoing.

The meeting subsequently entered into a closed-door session to consider the report presented by  Anyaoku while the labour leaders requested 21 days to study the report.

At the end of the deliberation, the minister of state for petroleum, Dipriye Sylva, and the minister of labour and employment, Chris Nigige, who briefed reporters warned that another three weeks to study the report could have an effect on the availability of petroleum products in the market.

Also at the meeting were the Secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, as well as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari.

Ayuba Wabba, and Quadri Olaleye, Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress (TUC), respectively led the labour delegation.
