By our reporter| President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies to shoot anyone seen with an AK-47 in the country.
Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu who made the disclosure Shehu in an interview with the BBC, said the president has also directed a clampdown on bandits who have refused to surrender.
According to Shehu, the government is resorting to lethal force against those of them who have refused to surrender as efforts are being made to rid Zamfara and other northern states of bandits.
Shehu told the BBC, “The president has ordered security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with sophisticated weapons like AK-47.”
“He ordered that whoever is seen with terrible weapons at all should be shot immediately.”
Shehu further revealed that the federal government declared Zamfara a no-fly zone following intelligence that arms were being ferried to the bandits with private jets.
According to him, jets are also used to cart away gold from Zamfara to Dubai, which, according to him, hence the ban on mining activities announced on Tuesday by the federal government.
“These jets are being used to pick up gold that is being mined in some parts of Zamfara and exported. This is strong because at the moment,” he said.
“There is a Nigerian gold market in Dubai. The government is losing, the people of this country are losing, that’s why it is said that gold mining is banned for those who are not made by the government.”
It will be recalled that the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar said in November last year that bandits move around freely with AK-47 in various parts of the north.
