“Nigeria needs Twitter as Twitter needs Nigeria, Says Lawan

Yusuf Bello| Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, on Friday for the first since the federal government suspended the operation of microblogging firm Twitter in the country officially made a pronouncement on the development.

Lawan who spoke during a media briefing to mark the second anniversary of the ninth Senate, while not taking a definite stand on the ban, however, said he is optimistic that the matter will be resolved soon as the federal government is currently in talks with Twitter. The federal government last Friday suspended the operations of Twitter after the microblogging platform deleted a Tweet by President Buhari referencing the civil.

The announcement triggered controversies and condemnation from within and outside Nigeria, with many describing the ban as an attempt to gag the media, and Nigerians.

But discussing the matter during the press briefing, Lawan reminded reporters that the federal government was working towards resolving the issue.

“The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has informed Nigerians that they are talking with Twitter to resolve this matter, he said.

“Nigeria needs Twitter just as much as Twitter needs Nigeria. I believe this engagement between Twitter and the government will yield fruitful results.
