Support groups purchase APC nomination forms for Emefiele, as Yerima joins presidential race

By our reporter| Three interest groups on Friday picked the presidential nomination form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to a report in TheCable, the three groups, “rice farmers”, “Emefiele Support Group” and “Friends of Godwin Emefiele” picked the form at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja.

A source close to the apex bank governor told the publication on Friday that Emefiele is yet to make up his mind on the issue.

“I’m aware three groups picked the form for him,” but “he is yet to take a final decision”, he said.

There has been speculation for months on the likelihood of Emefiele contesting the 2023 presidential election, a development that has divided opinions.

Meanwhile, former governor of Zamfara state, Ahmed Yerima, on Friday became the latest politician to indicate interest in the presidential primaries All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yerima, who made his intension public shortly after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, said the President gave him the nod to contest the ticket.

He further explained that he is acting within the provisions of the Nigerian constitution, and that if elected, would fight insecurity, poverty, and ignorance.

“I’m here this afternoon to inform Mr. President of my intention to participate in the 2023 elections and to contest the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, he said.

“I’m going to, Insha Allah, purchase my forms today and officially declare this afternoon.

“So, I have three points as well; to fight insecurity, fight poverty, and ignorance.”

Yerima, who once represented Zamfara West in the senate, is famous for introducing Sharia law in Zamfara during his tenure as governor.

The presidential primary is scheduled for May 30 to June 1.
