Voices From Abroad: Being the best of you

Jason Ngozi-Nwadinobi| I had a discussion with one of my sisters last night, we were talking about a certain exercise move she hasn’t been able to do well.

She said she still found it hard to do this move because she hadn’t been practising.
She also said she needed to spend time practising the things that are hard for her, so she could get better at them.

This statement literarily hit me like a thunderbolt!

It made so much sense to me, and it also made me realise that even if you’re a natural at something, if you want to be the best, or simply get better at it, you must practise.

One example that easily comes to mind is my writing. I have a natural flair or gift for it and I know I’m good.

In the past, I took this gift for granted, and didn’t think I could get better at it.
That is, until a mentor told me that the more I write, the better I’d become.

So, here I am, writing to you “ghainz” today, working on being the best at my craft.

PRANK GONE WRONG

My husband and I played a prank on our son this morning.

When he asked what they’d be having for breakfast, I told him we were fasting.

Me: (Acting surprised) Didn’t your daddy tell you we would be fasting today?

Chinazam: He didn’t tell us

Me: Chai, sorry. We’re fasting sha, but you’re allowed a little sip of water since you’re not mentally prepared.

Chinazam: Papa, see what you’ve caused now! Mama, please can I have a little juice?

Me: I said water. Juice na water???

Chinazam slowly sinks into my bed, sad at having to miss breakfast and maybe lunch too. I feel sorry for him, and announce that it was just a joke o!

Na im this boy begin halla o!
Crying at the injustice of the joke. He kept crying, telling us never to play this kind of prank on him ever again.

Right now, he’s in the kitchen, having breakfast and refusing to talk to anybody.

Someone shuu coman epp us beg him.

Abi, Cheena, dem no dey play with you again ni?
