Fayose dumps Atiku, demands power shift to south

By our reporter| Former Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, on Wednesday dumped the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and threw his support for a southern president in 2023.

Fayose, one of the presidential aspirants who lost the party’s presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar, supported the candidature of Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike for the vice-presidential candidate of the party.

Atiku eventually picked Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate, a development that didn’t go down well with Fayose and some other PDP leaders.

In a statement via his Twitter handle, Fayose said it is the turn of the southern region to produce a president.

“The PDP Constitution provides for a rotational Presidency. Section 3(c) provides that the Party shall pursue its aims & objectives by adhering to the policy of the rotation & zoning of Party & Public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice, and fairness,” he wrote.

“The current President of Nigeria is a 2-term Northern Presidency, thus implying that it MUST be a Southern Presidency in 2023 or NOTHING.”

Writing in Yoruba language, Fayose also tweeted that “awa south lo kan”, which means “it is the turn of the south”. The remark is a reference to the catchphrase attributed to Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former governor added that Nigerians should “await details soon”.

Earlier on Wednesday, Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom in an interview with Arise TV said he is waiting for divine intervention before deciding whether to support Atiku’s presidential bid.

Ortom is one of the PDP leaders who are not happy with the emergence of Ifeanyi Okowa as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
