Senate suspend Ningi for three months over budget padding scandal

Our reporter/ The senate on Tuesday suspended Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations that the 2024 budget was padded with N3.7 trillion.

The senator from Niger state was suspended for three months after deliberation on the house floor turned rowdy.

Jimoh Ibrahim moved the motion to suspend Ningi for 12 months for breaching the peace of the National Assembly and misinforming the public.

Other senators recommended six or three months’ suspension.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who described Ningi’s allegations as grievous, announced the lawmakers suspension after a voice vote supporting a three-month suspension for the senator.

Ningi, a Peoples Democratic Party member and leader of the Northern Senators Caucus, has on Monday in an interview with BBC Hausa language, alleged that the 2024 Budget was padded with an additional N3.7 trillion not traceable to any budget.
