Police to start jailing Nigerians for cursing govt officials, others on social media

Our reporter/ The Police in Nigeria has described the act of raining direct curses on individuals online as a criminal offence punishable under the law.

Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who made the disclosure via a Post on X on Friday said law enforcement authorities will start clamping down on Nigerians who rain curses on government officials and others on social media platforms, threatening to prosecute and jail them.

The Force Headquarters issued the warning on Friday prohibiting Nigerians from accursing officials.

“Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not expression of freedom or criticism. And cyberbullying, which is even different from defamation, is a criminal offence and punishable.  Be guided,” Adejobi wrote.

According to Adejobi, such an act is cyber bullying which goes beyond the freedom of expression or criticism.

As expected many Nigerians took to the social media to condemn Adejobi’s threat.
