Outrage trails Okpebholo’s threats against Peter Obi

Our reporter/ Nigerians on Friday took to the social media to condemn Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo for threatening Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election.

Okpebholo had in a viral video that trended on Friday evening, threatened  Obi for giving a ₦15M grant to a nursing college in Benin, two weeks ago.

An obviously agitated Okpebholo in the video said Peter Obi claims he doesn’t have shi shi, but goes around giving ₦15M to schools.

He warned Obi not come back to Edo State without his permission, otherwise anything he sees, he should take it.

Event hough Okpebholo didn’t directly mention Peter Obi but the Labour Party chieftain is the only public person to have recently donated ₦15M to a school in the state.

Obi donated ₦15M to Philomena College of Nursing Sciences in Benin City on July 7th. It wasn’t the first time he’s donating to that particular institution.

Following the threats, many Nigerians took to X [ Formerly Twitter] to condemn Okpebholo and urged Peter Obi to be brave, visit the state and see what happens.

Okpebholo joins Benue Governor in openly blocking Obi from visiting their states.

Below are some tweets directed against Okpebholo’s outburst on Friday…

Nigeria is not a monarchy. No governor is a warlord. And certainly, no state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a private estate.

I have just watched the disturbing and disgraceful comments made by the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, openly threatening Mr. Peter Obi for visiting Edo State and donating N15 million to a nursing school. According to reports, the governor went as far as to say that Mr. Peter Obi should not come to Edo without his permission as his security will not be guaranteed.

Let me say this as clearly and respectfully as possible: Who gave you that authority, sir?

Your threats are not only laughable, they are unconstitutional, anti-democratic, and reveal the dangerous mindset of those who rose to power not through the ballot of the people but through the machinery of electoral manipulation.

This is exactly what happens when elections are rigged. Instead of leaders, we get emperors. Instead of public servants, we get public threats. Instead of governance, we get gangsterism.

Mr @PeterObi is a citizen of Nigeria. He owes no governor permission to move freely within his country, especially not when his visit is to support the health and education of our young people, things you should have been doing as governor. If anything, you should have welcomed him, applauded him, and maybe even taken notes.

But when you are installed by the will of crookedness instead of the will of the people, the presence of true leaders will always feel like a threat. Because light makes darkness uncomfortable.

Let me also warn, and I say this with all sense of responsibility, that no governor, no matter how desperate, must think they can silence or intimidate Nigerians. That era is gone. You can not threaten a nation awake.

Mr.@PeterObi represents hope for millions of Nigerians who are tired of politics without conscience. Any attempt to harass, restrict, or vilify him is an attack not just on him but on our democracy, and we will resist it.

Edo is not under siege. Edo is not under a dictator. Edo is part of the sovereign Republic of Nigeria. And Mr Peter Obi, or any Nigerian, has every right to go there and support progress.

To Governor Okpebholo, I say, You were selected to serve, not to bark threats at citizens. Nigeria belongs to all of us, not just to those who found their way to office by the manipulation of INEC or the might of godfathers.

Nigeria must rise. And we will.

Dear Monday Okpebholo,

Peter Obi is not poor. By the special grace of God, he is a trader & a billionaire. But his shishi is meant for schools, hospitals & charities only.

While we don’t appreciate the threats, we appreciate the shout-outs…. Thank you!

Ah, behold the “chosen one”!
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mr. Monday Okpebholo, the self-acclaimed Governor of Edo State and now, part-time Peter Obi threat analyst.

If Peter Obi so much as stubs his toe, THIS is the face you should remember.
Because apparently, intimidation is now part of their swearing-in ceremony.

RT aggressively. Let the whole world see. Let the world hear.

I’m beyond appalled watching Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo openly threaten Peter Obi saying his life is not safe in Edo if he doesn’t inform him first before coming because he came last week and donated 15Million to a nursing school in Edo State.

This is just like Gary Neville as Valencia manager challenging Pep Guardiola for winning the Champions League.

Does that man know his mate at all?
A man that couldn’t speak throughout his campaign and was rigged in to become Governor just the way Neville didn’t know how he became manager in Valencia!!!!

Abuchi Okaro @Zikidad

Monday Okpebholo, you need to be reminded that Peter Obi is a private Nigerian citizen with the constitutional right to visit any state in Nigeria. By threatening his life, you have crossed a dangerous line.

Olusegun Bakare @theboyisgreat

Peter Obi has never said he is poor or broke , that he doesn’t give shishi to political thugs like Monday Okpebholo doesn’t mean he does not have better things to do with his money..

PO no dey give shishi…..

Mazi.Nnaemeka @Emmypromise71

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo statement to Peter Obi is very wrong & very silly at the same time.

So, a whole Nigerian citizen now needs your permission to enter Edo? Are you now the owner of the state?

This kind of arrogance is what happens when power enters the hands of small minds.

You’re not a king. You’re just a public servant with an expiry date. Calm your ass down, governor!!!

Chief U C Maxwell @UkoMahM

Even on a Monday, Okpebholo is unfit to man my gate!

So LOW in IQ, they named him OkpebhoLOW. Edo people, let me see you go LOW LOW LOW.

Daniel Regha @DanielRegha

Peter Obi or whoever Monday Okpebholo was referring to has a right to visit the state, no-one is required to report their every move to a sitting governor, Nigeria isn’t a classroom. And it’s seriously disturbing how a governor is making indirect threats in a public gathering. Edo State should be safe for everyone, regardless who they are and our political differences. This is troubling.

I iObserve @oluwaseyi

Man’s IQ so low he doesn’t know Peter Obi’s “we no dey give shishi” remark applies to bribes and corruption, and not charity and philanthropy. But why am I gobsmacked? His name is Monday Okpebholo for a reason. I wish made that up. Funny name. Funnier character, even.

Obiasogu David @afrisagacity

What is instructive in Monday Okpebholo’s threat to Peter Obi is that it reveals the mood in Tinubu and the APC camp.

That a Governor threw caution to the wind and threaten Obi in public, in such a wild weird manner, tells how sore afraid they are.

Things have fallen apart!
