Our reporter/ As the genocide against Nigerian Christians gets global attention, Romanian football fans displayed a banner titled ‘Defend Nigerian Christians’ to highlight the violence against Christians on October 12 during a world cup qualifying game against Austria in Bucharest.
Advocacy group Open Doors and others in the West and America has recently spoken out against the genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
According to Open Doors, more than 5000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria from October 2023 to September 2024. Ranking it the 6th globally in Christian persecution.
US lawmakers and HBO star, Bill Maher have urged the American government to act against the violence and protect the Nigerian Christian community.
Earlier on Wednesday, Senator Ted Cruz wrote on X, “Enough is enough. Congress should move my Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act to push back against the Nigerian officials behind these atrocities”, in response to Maher’s expression of shock that the world is silent on the killing of Christians in Nigeria.
Rep Nancy Mace in her reaction tweeted via X, “Bill Maher said what the media refuses to: faith is under fire.
“You don’t have to be a Christian to see evil for what it is. What’s happening to Christians in Nigeria is genocide, and pretending it isn’t happening won’t make it stop”.
The Nigerian government has denied that Christians are being killed deliberately in the country, describing the situation as complex. The Countries upper chamber on Tuesday set up a 12-member committee to look into the matter.
However, the Christian Association of Nigeria [CAN] last week confirmed that Christians and places of worship are deliberately being targeted by Islamist groups with security agencies unable to provide security.
