#FreeNnamdiKanu: Police fire tear gas at protesters in Abuja

The Police in Abuja on Monday fired tear gas to disperse #FreeNnamdiKanu protesters around Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

The protesters, who gathered to demand the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra boss Nnamdi Kanu, were met with heavy police and military presence shortly after assembling opposite the Transcorp Hilton hotel.

Security operatives fired multiple tear gas canisters and gunshots into the air to force the demonstrators to disperse.

The protest leader, Omoyele Sowore, and many others fled the scene as the air thickened with tear gas smoke. It was not immediately clear whether some of the protesters were wounded.

No report of arrest has been made amid the police crackdown.

The protest comes amid renewed calls for Mr Kanu’s unconditional release following recent mounting pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to expedite the judicial process or free the IPOB leader.
