The Presidency has included N7 billion as part of its expenditure for a solar power system in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in the 2026 appropriation bill, amid the recurring power instability citizens struggle with.
This is included in the proposed N58.18 trillion budget presented by President Bola Tinubu on December 19, 2025, at the National Assembly.
In 2025, a sum of N10 billion (budget code – ERGP202502463) was also budgeted for the same project in the same presidential villa by the same president. Yet again, this is a consistent showcase of a lack of confidence in the country’s ailing power sector.
This project reveals the Presidency’s stance on power supply amid recurring national grid collapses that have posed a significant challenge to the power sector, particularly under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The country experienced the collapse of its national power grid at least four times in 2025 and approximately 12 times in 2024. This problem has yet to receive a lasting solution.
However, the Aso Rock solar power expenditure resurfaces in the 2026 proposed budget despite Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, promising to stabilise Nigeria’s national electricity grid by 2026.
“Our Light Up Nigeria initiative remains a priority, focusing on industrial clusters and agricultural hubs to stimulate economic growth and job creation,” the power minister said.
“As Phase One of the PPI (Presidential Power Initiative) continues, we assure Nigerians of a strengthened grid that will make disturbances a thing of the past.”
According to recent reports, several manufacturing companies exited the national grid in 2025, including major players like Dangote Industries generating 1,500 megawatts internally.
