Amupitan lied, digital footprint confirms INEC boss was pro-Tinubu, APC campaigner

Despite the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Chairman, Joash Amupitan’s denial of previous ties with President Bola Tinubu, fresh evidence shows his Yahoo mail and phone number are linked to the same X account that declared “victory is sure” for the All Progressives Congress in March 2023.

On Friday, Amupitan through his spokesperson, Adedayo Oketola, issued a rebuttal on claims the INEC chairman was Tinubu’s supporter, affirming he’s a neutral appointee, a requirement mandated by the constitution to protect the sanctity of the nation’s election space.

Oketola in the statement claimed Amupitan “does not own or operate any personal account on X. He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity.”

However, following reports that INEC Chairman supported PresidentTinubu in 2023 and recently locked his X account, @grok was asked by a user to Investigate the X account @joashamupitan, believed to belong to Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of INEC Nigeria to determine the following…

1. Whether the account has changed usernames, display names, or profile information over time.
2. Search for any deleted or archived tweets that expressed political loyalty or support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or President Bola Tinubu.
3. Look for evidence of political commentary, partisan statements, or campaign-related engagement prior to the user’s current role.
4. Use web archives (Wayback Machine), tweet caches, screenshots, quoted tweets, and replies from other users to reconstruct any deleted posts.
5. Identify whether other users have referenced or quoted tweets from @joashamupitan that no longer exist.
6. Check for past likes, retweets, or interactions with APC-affiliated figures or accounts.
7. Determine if the account previously used a different handle before becoming @joashamupitan.
8. Provide a timeline of the account’s activity, including any gaps that might indicate mass deletion.
9. Include links, screenshots, or archived sources for any recovered tweets or evidence.
10. Clearly distinguish verified facts from speculation.

@grok replying @Ochijnr and @joeamupitan noted the following…

1-3,7: Account joashamupitan (ID 1567086242164101120, created 6 Sep 2022) aligns with Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan via email (amupitanjyahoo.com) on his UniJos CV. Today (10 Apr 2026), username changed to Sundayvibe00, profile locked/protected, relabeled “Parody Account,” prior posts deleted after a 2023 tweet resurfaced.

4-5,9: 2023 tweet: “Victory is sure” (context: APC gubernatorial results, replied to/interacted with APC’s Dayo Israel). Viral screenshots from today confirm; no Wayback captures found, but quoted/referenced widely (e.g., the Nigeria Lawyer article: thenigerialawyer.com/victory-is-sur…).

6,8: No evidence of other likes/retweets with APC figures or mass pre-2026 deletions in searches. Low activity ( ~23 posts) until recent official INEC statements. Gap today matches reported purge.

10: Verified via public reports, account ID, CV match. Ownership probable; tweet factual per screenshots. No speculation on motive.

@grok was further asked to produce Amupitan’s UniJos CV with the same email connecting the X account

Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan’s publicly available UniJos CV (shared widely post his INEC appointment) lists under Personal Data:

Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan’s publicly available UniJos CV (shared widely post his INEC appointment) lists under Personal Data:

E-MAIL: amupitanunijos.edu.ng
amupitanjyahoo.com

This exact personal Yahoo email (amupitanjyahoo.com) matches the one tied to the X account joashamupitan (now Sundayvibe00, protected/parody after username change and deletions), per reports linking ownership.

Consistent excerpts from multiple sources (e.g., Facebook posts by Ben Owoleke and others) confirm the full CV header and contact details. No official UniJos-hosted PDF located, but details align across public references.

Also, open-source intelligence (OSINT) findings appear to contradict the claim by the INEC Chairman.

To verify amu***anj@yahoo.com email address, Yahoo asked to send notifications to the linked phone number, 0803***4099, the same line linked to an Opay customer account with username “Joash Ojo Amupitan.”

Opay accounts usually comprise a customer’s phone number without the first zero. In this case, 8035074099, listed the account user as Joash Ojo Amupitan.
Contacted on Saturday for his reaction on the fresh findings, Oketola said, “We stand by our statement. A statement was issued yesterday and that is our official position on the matter.”

That the X account registered with amupitanj@yahoo.com linked to a phone number bearing Amupitan’s full name casts doubt on the INEC chairman’s claim he had no alliance with the APC nor Tinubu during the 2023 elections.
