A Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu, has been sentenced to eight years in a US prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy involving computer intrusions and wire fraud.
Prosecutors say he and his associates hacked American tax preparation businesses, stole the personal information of about 800 customers and obtained roughly $2.5 million in fraudulent tax refunds. They also collected at least $819,000 through fraudulent business relief applications.
But that was not the end of the story. Amachukwu was also involved in a separate investment scam that generated more than $7 million in fraudulent proceeds. Apparently, the operation had more than one way of making money, and none of them was legal.
