Spanish police has reportedly opened investigation after second-division club CD Tenerife confirmed the death of striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, 30, following a collision during a league match against FC Andorra the previous evening.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, with the score tied 2-2 in stoppage time. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono advanced from his penalty area to intercept a long clearance and collided with de Miguel near midfield.
Owono’s raised knee struck the Tenerife forward in the chest. De Miguel collapsed and lay motionless on the pitch. Medical staff attended to him for several minutes before he was transferred by an ambulance to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
The referee issued Owono a straight red card and abandoned the match. Spanish media reported that de Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics en route to hospital. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, where his condition was initially described as stable but serious.
In the early hours of Tuesday, the club stated that his neurological condition had deteriorated. CD Tenerife later confirmed his death at 8:00 a.m. local time.
In a statement, the club said: “Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.”
The statement added that de Miguel’s family had expressed gratitude for messages of support and requested privacy. FC Andorra also issued condolences to the player’s family, teammates, and the Tenerife community. Major Spanish clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, similarly expressed their sympathy.
De Miguel, a Madrid-born forward, had joined CD Tenerife in 2025. The collision and its fatal outcome have prompted widespread expressions of grief across Spanish football.
