Mob sets two banks ablaze after policeman shoots tanker driver dead

Two bank branches, Diamond and Sterling were on Wednesday set ablaze by an angry mob along Burma road, Apapa, Lagos over alleged shooting to death of a tank driver by a police officer attached to one of the banks.

Eye witness account said that trouble started when an unidentified mobile policeman objected to the parking of a tanker in front of the bank.

The refusal of the driver to move the tank away from the front of the bank led the mobile policeman to shoot sporadically into the air.

The pellets from the sporadic shooting hit the driver who bled to death at the scene of the incident as he was not attended to.

Angered by the incident, the mob, most of which were said to be the driver’s colleagues, reportedly set the bank on fire and also the nearby bank building when they learned that the policeman was hiding there.

Policemen from Rapid Response Squad, anti-riot squad, and Area B command, as well as operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECEOFT were deployed to the scene of the incident as at press time.
