A section of Imo airport razed by fire

Passengers and airport workers scrambled for safety on Monday afternoon as the arrival section of the Sam Mbakwe international cargo airport in Owerri, Imo State was engulfed by inferno.

The fire which started at about 2 pm, lasted for another 50 minutes before it was contained by the gallant efforts of fire servicemen with the help of airport workers.

The cause of the fire could not be established immediately but a worker who witnessed the incident informed newsmen that there was an ongoing renovation going on at the section gutted by the inferno.

According to him, “It happened at the arrival department of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.

“It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.

“It started around 2:10 pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure, but the rescue work assisted in salvaging the situation.”

The Sam Mbakwe airport is the gateway for air travellers from Imo and Abia states to other parts of the country.
