Adeboye Tweets, says tweeting is within UN charter on human rights

By our reporter| The general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye on Monday defied the federal government’s Twitter ban.

In defying the ban placed on the microblogging platform by the FG, the revered cleric said, tweeting is in accordance with Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of human rights.

HE tweeted, “The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 Nations & Territories. The tweets here are in accordance to Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of Human Rights.”

Alabingo.com reported that the government last Friday announced the “indefinite” suspension of Twitter owing to “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Many key stakeholders in and outside the country has criticized the move, with Amnesty International (AI) asking the federal government to reverse its decision while the US, UK, Canada, and EU also condemned the development.

At a meeting with the envoys of the three countries and the EU earlier on Monday, Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, said Nigeria is taking their concerns “very seriously”, and will restore the services of Twitter under certain conditions.

He said, “The condition would be a responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it.”

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities.”
