Anyaoku calls for restructuring of Nigeria along six federating units

Chidi Samuel || Elder statesman and former secretary General of the commonwealth countries Chief Emeka Anyaoku on Saturday reiterated the call for the complete restructuring of Nigeria. Chief Anyaoku, a consistent advocate for the restructuring of the country made the call at the birthday dinner to mark the 80th birthday celebration of Pro Anya o. Anya in Lagos.

In his keynote speech at the event, Anyaoku advocated that the country be restructured from the currently unwieldy and resource guzzling thirty-six state structure towards the line of six federating units. Under this arrangement, the elder statesman explained that the 36 states as presently constituted will be turned into development zones and if the need arises for government to taken closer to the people more development zones or local governments may be created as the case maybe.

Chief Anyoku counseled those who argue that restructuring will lead to disintegration of the country to go back to the history of the first republic. According to him, it was indisputable that there was a better sense of national unity and healthy competition when Nigeria in the early years of independent had four regions.
