The Imo State University’s faculty of Humanities in Owerri, was in the early hours of Thursday razed by fire.

The outbreak destroyed documents and academic equipment worth millions of Naira.

According to some students who witnessed the incident, the fire started around 3 am and it affected almost all the lecturers’ offices in the faculty and destroyed computer offices of various departments in the faculty and libraries.

One of the students told newsmen, “A fire outbreak has destroyed the Humanities Faculty Annex of our school. It started by 3 am and before help could be rendered, equipment and valuable documents have been destroyed.”

“Documents were lost in offices that include those of the Dean of the Faculty. We pray the incident does not affect our academic programme.”

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Obi Njoku, while confirming the incident, said that much damage had been done before fire fighters arrived.

According to him, it is too early to estimate the value of property lost to the fire.
