Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the banned Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and his wife, Zeenat has left Abuja for India for medical treatment.
The embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, left with his wife and other security personnel aboard an Emirate Airline number EK2614.
Earlier on Monday, El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, following the order of a Kaduna State High court which granted them leave to seek medical treatment at an Indian hospital.
This followed an application by El-Zakzaky’s counsel and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), to allow them to travel for treatment as a result of their deteriorating health condition.
Despite opposition from the prosecuting counsel, the presiding Judge, Justice Darius Khobo, last Monday ruled that ElZakzaky and his wife, accompanied by officials of the Kaduna State Government be allowed to travel to India for medical treatment.
On Monday, the Iranian News agency, Fars News, published a letter by one hundred and eighty six doctors from Pakistan, India, to President Muhammadu Buhari concerning Sheikh El-Zakzaky’s physical conditions.
According to the publication, the doctors asked the Nigerian government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.
The trial ElZakzaky and his wife who had been in detention since 2015, is expected to resume as soon as they return from the trip.
