Bandits ambush police team in Zamfara, kill 7 officers, gun down retired Air vice marshal, grand child in kaduna

Not less than seven police officers were killed by bandits in an ambush near Zonai village in Magami district in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Monday.

According to residents, the policemen were returning from duty where they mounted a check point near Zonai village along Gusau-Magami-Dansadau road when the armed gang opened fire on the vehicle conveying the officers.

“It is a very sad development especially for us in Magami town because the policemen had tremendously helped in stabilizing the horrific security situation in this axis.”

“In fact, their presence at that checkpoint had boosted the confidence of the travellers to ply that road. Dozens of travellers have been killed or kidnapped along the 50 km Gusau-Magami road. It is really sad and tragic,” a resident simply identified as Halliru told a national publication.

The Zamfara state police command spokesman, SP Muhammad Shehu, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

The public relations officer of the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Awwal Usman Ruwandoruwa, however, told the publication that remains of the slain officers were brought to the hospital around 8am on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a retired Air Vice Marshal, Mohammed Maisaka, and his grandchild, have been shot at Rigasa, a community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

According to Daily Trust report, the 27-year-old grandchild, Mohammed Musa, who is a serving Airman, is his grandfather’s orderly.

The gunmen, the report said, stormed their residence located around Markarfi Road in Rigasa around 8:30 pm on Monday and shot the two at closed range.

The deceased’s wife, Hajiya Fatima Maisaka, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen did not take take anything from the house.

“They only came into the parlour and killed them both without taking any of our belongings. In fact, they left our phones with us.”

The deceased, who before his death was the MD of MSK specialist Hospital Makarfi Road Rigasa, left behind his wife, children and aged mother.

State police Command Public Relations Officer ASP Jalige Mohammed, did not pick his calls.
