Bornu governors convoy attacked by Boko Haram fighters

By our reporter| Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State convoy was on Wednesday attacked by Boko Haram fighters along the highly dangerous Baga highway, in the northern part of the state.

A break away faction of the Boko Haram group, the Islamic State of West Africa Province operatives in the area that has become notorious unsafe for soldiers, aid workers and civilians.

Preliminary report about the attack is still sketchy and the motive for the ambush is unclear at this time.

The governor left Maiduguri, the state capital on Monday to personally oversee the distribution of palliatives to internally displaced persons in some local governments to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.

According to a security source who witnessed the attack, Zulum’s convoy ran into an ambush on Baga road in the evening of Wednesday.

He said, “Glory be to God. Governor’s convoy was intercepted gunmen along the Baga road.

“Fortunately, the convoy cleared them with two vigilantes and a policeman wounded. The convoy have since returned to Monguno town.”

Mohammed Mai Bukar, one of the governor’s aides, in a Facebook post assured Bornu residents that Zulum is safe.

Bukar wrote, “To Our Concerned citizens H.E Prof.Zulum and His Entourage are all fine and there was (were) no casualties. Thanks!”
