Court grants El-Zakzaky, wife leave to travel to India for treatment

The Kaduna State High Court on Monday granted leader of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife Zeenat, bail to seek medical treatment abroad.

Justice Darius Khobo, in his ruling, ordered that El-Zakzaky and his wife proceed to India for treatment but should be accompanied abroad by officials of the Kaduna State government.

Justice Khobo did not state how long the IMN leader and his wife will spend in India while being treated.

Counsel to Kaduna State government, Dari Bayero, while reacting to the judgment, said the prosecution will study the judgement to see if there were grounds for appeal.

El-Zakzakys, counsel, Femi Falena, (SAN), told journalists that Monday’s ruling is not an outright bail for his client but a grant for the IMN leader and his wife leave to seek medical attention abroad.

The trial of El-Zakzaky and his wife, according to him is expected to resume as soon as they return from their medical treatment.

El-Zakzaky and his wife who were first arraigned in May 2018 by the Kaduna state government and are facing an eight-count of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disturbance of public peace.
