Ebun Francis || A federal high court in Lagos on Monday awarded N2m to Okwuchukwu Obiechina, the brother-in-law of billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, in a fundamental right enforcement suit he instituted against the Nigeria police.
Obiechina filed the suit which challenged the right of the police to illegally detain him in the course of investigation into Evan’s kidnapping activities.
The presiding judge, Mohammed Idris in his ruling said that Obiechina’s detention by the police was illegal and unconstitutional.
Idris also declared as invalid the purported order the police claimed it used to remand the accused in court and directed the police to charge him to court or release him immediately.
In awarding the sum of N2m to Obiechina, the Judge, in addition, ordered the police to tender a public apology to him which must be published in two national newspapers.
