Chidi Samuel|Nigeria on Saturday confirmed 250 new cases of the novel coronavirus as Lagos state announced plans to reopen schools across the state in September.
According to the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control, the new infections brings 53,727, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country.
The NCDC data further showed that Saturday’s infections were recorded across 20 states and the FCT with Plateau state reporting the highest number of new cases -69, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) -41, Lagos-21, Delta-14, and Kaduna-14.
Other states with new infections include, Bayelsa-13, Enugu-13, Ekiti-11, Bauchi-9, Ogun-8, Edo-7, Oyo-7, Rivers-6, Adamawa-4, Osun-4, Nasarawa-3, Ebonyi-2, Kwara-2, Gombe-1, and Imo-1.
The health agency said that at least 41,314 cases of the virus have now been resolved in the country, whith 1,011 fatalities.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, earlier on Saturday ordered the reopening of tertiary institutions in the state from September 14, in apparent response to the declining number of new infections in the state.
The governor who made the disclosure during a briefing at the State House, Marina also disclosed that primary and secondary schools may tentatively be re-opened by September 21, 2020.
All schools in Lagos state and other States of the country had, since March, been closed due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed hundreds of lives.
“I am pleased to announce that our tertiary institutions will be allowed to reopen from September 14, 2020.
“This decision is subject to review of our ongoing modelling and what procedure comes out from the Ministry of health,” he said.
The governor, however, that bars, spas, night clubs, and lounges among others remain closed.
