Our reporter/Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and his deputy, Monday Onyeme, have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress.
Oborevwori moved to the APC along with his predecessor and running mate of Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.
Others who moved to the ruling party with the governor are his commissioners and major stakeholders in the PDP in Delta State.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, confirmed the development after a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.
Ahon said, “His excellency took the decision after wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.’’
Oborevwori defected to the APC alongside several party’s stakeholders in the state including a former governor of the state, Ifeanyi Okowa.
The development came amid a seemingly unresolvable crisis in the PDP and political watchers believe the move could potentially undermine the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
Oborevwori took over from Okowa who ran alongside a former vice president Atiku Abubakar to challenge Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC in the 2023 presidential election.
