He defeated the Democratic nominee and the favoured candidate of the establishment on both parties and the media Hilary Clinton, the former secretary of state and wife of ex President Bill Clinton. Trump who was written off by almost every political commentator in USA, won the election by winning key battle ground states of Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania By his victory, Trump made history as the first candidate to win the white house without having held political office nor served the in the military. The Republican Party also retained control of the senate and house of representatives.
