Kingsley Samuel || The ‘no love lost’ lost relationship between the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Economic Crime Commission, EFCC and members of the National Assembly continued on Wednesday with the House of Representative Committee on Ethics issuing a warrant for the arrest of the anti-crime boss.
The committee decided to issue the warrant for the arrest of the EFCC boss following his inability to appear before the committee currently investigating the allegation of undue harassment by security agencies as contained in a petition by the former first lady Mrs. Patience Jonathan.
The committee had earlier passed a resolution directing the EFCC to unblock the former first lady’s accounts in some commercial banks, a directive that was countered by the House leader, Hon Femi Gbajabiamiala.
At the resumed hearing of the committee’s sitting on Wednesday, its chairman Uzoma Abonta accused Magu of deliberately refusing to appear before them despite sending several letters to him.
Abonta said, “There is a need to say that people should work within the confines of the law because nobody is above the law.”
“EFCC has consistently absented itself from this hearing. If it were here, perhaps we would have dispensed with this investigation. What the EFCC is doing is not only unfair but disrespectful to the parliament.”
Following Abonta’s observation, a member of the committee Hon Chinda Kingsley moved that a warrant of arrest be issued for the EFCC boss.
He said, It’s not only for the workings of this committee but for any other institutional body.”
“So, I move that the EFCC chairman be issued a bench warrant to appear before this committee to explain his role so that we can conclude this investigation.”
All members of the committee voted in favour of the motion.
