I never knew I will not see my daughter again- Fasoranti

Afenifere leader and father of slain Funke Olakurin, Pa Reuben Fasoranti on Saturday told mourners who thronged his Akure home that he never knew he would not see her daughter again after she bade him farewell on Friday while returning to Lagos from Akure.

Funke Olakunrin, 58, was killed along Benin-Ore highway, on Friday by armed men believed to ‘Fulani herdsmen’.

The Afenifere leader who held back tears while receiving dignitaries at his Akure residence, asked the Buhari lead government to check the high rate of crime in Nigeria.

He said, “She came to me around 9 am on Friday to bid me farewell. I never thought I would not see her again.”

“President Muhammadu Buhari has called to commiserate with me. But all I need from the president is to find solutions to these killings in the country.”

Among the dignitaries who were in Akure to condole the elder statesman are, Chairman of Nigeria governors forum and governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, his Ondo state colleague, Rotimi Akeredolu and Olusegun Mimiko, former governor of Ondo.

Fayemi described the killing of Olakurin as a loss to the country.

“I know Mrs Olakunrin very well. As a matter of fact, she was with me three days ago before heading back to Lagos.”

“So, for me, it’s a personal loss. We all owe it a duty to tackle this issue of insecurity headlong in order to rescue our people from this situation.

Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu who late on Friday released a statement condemning the killing, assured that measures would be taken to tackle incessant kidnapping and killings in the state.

He said, “All of us are worried and there are some measures that have to be taken to prevent this. We must take whatever steps we want take to tackle this issue of insecurity in order not to allow this happen again.”

“It is a personal loss to all of us. For now, we are mourning a relative that has just passed on.”
