Chidi Samuel| The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Monday ordered the Assistant Inspectors General of Police in the 17 zonal commands and their constituent Commissioners of Police to carry out full enforcement of the COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations 2021, signed into law by President General Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement by the Force spokesman, Frank Mba, titled, ‘Ensure full enforcement of the COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations 2021, the IGP directed the affected officers to ensure full compliance with the regulations signed by President Buhari on January 26, 2021, in their respective areas of responsibility.
The order followed the directives by the President as contained in the regulations which mandates the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies of government to ensure full enforcement of the law in public places.
The IGP who noted the uncertainty and risks engendered by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic have placed additional responsibilities on the general public, called on the citizens to voluntarily comply with the provisions of the regulations for the safety of all.
The statement read in part, “The IGP further cautions officers enforcing the regulations to show tact, compassion, and empathy with the citizens.
“He reiterates that the officers must be firm and professional and at the same time remain polite, civil and respect the fundamental rights of the citizens.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria on Monday confirmed 676 new cases of #COVID19 with 21 deaths recorded across the country.
The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control in a statement via its verified Twitter handle said the new infections were recorded in 19 states and the FCT.
According to the update, Lagos the epicentre of the pandemic in Nigeria recorded 227 new cases, followed by the Rivers-73, Niger-69, Plateau-56, FCT-50, Kano-44, Oyo-43, Ogun-27, and Gombe-18.
Other states with new infections include, Ondo-15, Enugu-10, Osun-10, Cross River-8, Edo-8,
Nasarawa-7, Bauchi-4, Kaduna-3, Ekiti-2, and Zamfara-2.
According to the NCDC, Nigeria currently has 131,918 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, with 106,275 recoveries and 1,607 deaths.
