Lagos shuts school, arrest proprietor, pool instructor, caregivers over death of 2-year- old pupil

The Lagos State Government has closed Smiley Kids Montessori School on Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, following the death of a toddler in its swimming pool.

According to a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Kayode Sutton, the school was shut on .

The statement was issued on Saturday.

Mr Sutton stated that the closure was to enable the government to carry out preliminary investigations in the death of the two-year-old female pupil.

He said that the government was deeply pained by the death and had extended condolences to the child’s family.

Mr Sutton said that the school proprietor, the head of nursery section and the pupil’s teacher were being interrogated by the police.

He added that the pool instructor and two caregivers were also being interrogated.

According to him, the state government appeals to school owners and caregivers to comply with safety regulations to prevent accidents in schools and the entire state.

Rapheala Ogbodo, a two-year-old pupil reportedly found dead in her school pool.

A social media user with the name Ella on X had on Wednesday called for justice over the death of her daughter, who she said left for school that day but did not return alive.

She accused the management of the school of having a hand in the death of her daughter alleging that the late pupil was electrocuted and thrown into the pool to make it look like an accident.
