The move by Kano state government to reduce the influence of the Emir of Kano took a giant step forward on Tuesday as the motion for the creation of four additional emirates in Kano State scaled first reading at the Kano State House of Assembly.
The state assembly on commenced a move for the creation of Gaya, Rano, Bichi and Karaye emirates, a move many believe is targeted at the reingning Emir Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.
At Tuesday’s plenary, the house received a joint committee report of the House Standing Committees on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and that of Judiciary in respect of a petition to upgrade some traditional rulers to the status of 1st class emirs.
The four proposed emirates are presently being headed by district heads and if upgraded, will have emirs as heads.
Earlier attempt by governor Ganduje’s administration to create the four new emirates was jettioned following pessure mounted on the government from various quaters.
