Nigeria confirms 143 new infections as Africa’s COVID-19 cases surpass 2million

Chidi Samuel| Nigeria on Saturday confirmed 143 new cases of #COVID19 bringing the country’s cae load to 65,982.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control in a statement late on Saturday night also revealed that so far, 61,782 persons have recovered from the disease with 1,165 deaths recorded.

The NCDC further noted that that the new infections were recorded in ten states and the FCT with Lagos recording 70 new cases followed by Kaduna with -25.

Other states with new infections include, FCT-22, Ogun-11
Plateau-4, Oyo-4, Ekiti-3, Osun-2, Edo-1, and Kano-1.

-Africa’s COVID-19 cases surpass 2million

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO), Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, says there are over 2 million confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent.

The UN health agency gave the update on WHO African Region COVID-19 Dashboard.

WHO stated that there were more than two million confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent – with more than 1.7 million recoveries and 48,000 deaths cumulatively.

South Africa, Algeria and Kenya are countries with highest number of reported confirmed cases.

According to the dashboard, South Africa reported 757,144 cases and 20,556 deaths; Algeria had 70,629 cases and 2,206 deaths while Kenya reported 72,686 reported cases and 1,313 deaths.

The dashboard also stated that Nigeria had reported 65,693 cases and 1,163 deaths from COVID-19.
