Nigeria confirms 453 new COVID-19 cases with six more deaths

Chidi Samuel| Nigeria on Saturday confirmed 453 new coronavirus infections bringing the country’s tally 46,140.

Six more deaths were also recorded in the last 24 hours lifting the death burden to 942 including that of Senator Buruji Kashamu who died in a Lagos hospital on Saturday evening.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control in a statement via its verified Twitter handle, said the new cases are spread across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to the health agency, the FCT led the day with 75 new cases, followed Lagos with 71 cases, Benue -53, Delta -39, Bornu -30 and Enugu -25.

Other states with new infections include, Plateau -24 more cases, Osun – 20, Abia 19, Oyo -17, Kaduna 16, while Kano and Ebony 13 cases each, Ogun – 9, Kwara – 7, Ondo – 6, Gombe – 3, Ekiti – 2, Akwa Ibom – 1, and Rivers – 1.

According to NCDC 33,044 patients has recovered from the disease.

Meanwhile, even though the novel coronavirus pandemic has continued to spread despite efforts to curb its spread, the country has reported fewer cases in the month of August, compared to June and July when cases averaged more than 500 daily, exceeding 600 several times and hitting 745 on June 18.

The Government earlier this week extended a phase of eased lockdown by four weeks and the NCDC has warned that the time has not come for Nigerians to let down their guards and must continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols.
